X-Rays Q & A
What are X-rays?
X-rays are a type of diagnostic imaging. They use a combination of electronic sensors and ionizing radiation to capture detailed photos of your bones, joints, internal organs, or soft tissues.
X-ray imaging is entirely noninvasive and presents few side effects. As a result, there’s little risk and you can return to work and other normal activities immediately after your appointment.
What types of conditions can X-rays diagnose?
At Everyday Urgent Care, the team uses X-rays to diagnose various conditions, including:
- Bone cancer
- Breast tumors
- An enlarged heart
- Blocked blood vessels
- Fractures
- Infections
- Osteoporosis
- Arthritis
- Swallowed objects (like coins or small toys)
The team might also recommend X-rays to check how well a prescribed treatment is working.
How do I prepare for X-rays?
X-rays require very little preparation. On the day of your appointment, wear loose, comfortable clothing and leave all of your jewelry at home, including earrings, necklaces, and your watch. Let the team know if you have metal implants, like an artificial hip, before getting started.
Depending on the area of your body being X-rayed, you might also need a contrast material. Contrast materials are medical-grade substances that improve the quality of your X-ray images. They’re administered orally, with an injection, or with an enema.
What does getting X-rays involve?
At Everyday Urgent Care, the team takes X-rays onsite at their state-of-the-art imaging facility.
Before taking the X-rays, your provider has you change into a hospital gown. Then, they ask you to sit or lie down on an exam table.
Once you’re in position, they drape a lead apron over your body to prevent exposure to radiation. Then, your provider uses a computer console to take a series of X-rays. Afterward, your provider reviews the X-rays to make an official diagnosis.
When will I get the results of my X-rays?
At Everyday Urgent Care, the team provides same-day X-ray results whenever possible. Before leaving the office, your provider reviews the X-rays with you and identifies any areas of concern. They also provide you with a treatment plan that relieves uncomfortable symptoms and helps you feel better.
